Prelude – Luther’s Morning Prayer, setting by Carl Schalk

A treasured tradition at Lutheran Summer Music is beginning each day by singing Carl Schalk’s setting of Luther’s Morning Prayer. Memorized within days, and etched into our hearts for years to come, this beautiful piece is a common thread that links students, alumni, faculty, and staff across years and distance apart. Amidst the cancellation of LSM 2020, members of the LSM community over the years came together to create this special Virtual Choir recording of Luther’s Morning Prayer.

Welcome and Invocation

Call to Worship

L This is the day which the Lord has made;
C let us rejoice and be glad in it.
L From the rising of the sun to its setting,
C the name of the Lord is to be praised.

L Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere;
C I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
L Make me to know Your ways, O Lord.
C Teach me Your paths.
L Sanctify us in Your truth.
C Your Word is truth.

L From the rising of the sun to its setting,
C the name of the Lord is to be praised.

C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Opening Hymn: 10,000 Reasons

Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name

Verse 1
The sun comes up it’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes

Verse 2
You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger
Your name is great and Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

Verse 3
And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore
[Chorus 2x]

I’ll worship Your holy name
Lord I’ll worship Your holy name

Scripture Readings: Psalm 103:8-13, Luke 8:1-3

Psalm 103:8–13

8 The Lord is compassionate and merciful,
    slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
9 He will not constantly accuse us,
    nor remain angry forever.
10 He does not punish us for all our sins;
    he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.
11 For his unfailing love toward those who fear him
    is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
12 He has removed our sins as far from us
    as the east is from the west.
13 The Lord is like a father to his children,
    tender and compassionate to those who fear him.

Luke 8:1–3

Soon afterward Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and villages, preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. He took his twelve disciples with him, 2 along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons; 3 Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples.

Prayer of the Day

P Dear Father, as long as we are on this earth,
C we know adversities will come our way.
P So we ask that You help us to rest in You.
C We know that You are in control, the Lord over all storms, all circumstances.
P Help us to have the joy and peace that comes from believing Your promises
C so that we can be calm during all bad nights, confident that we’ll come out stronger in the morning.
P through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now,
C and forever. Amen

Sermon – “God’s Promise: ‘Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes in the morning.'”

Response to the Message – Hymn – Every Promise

1 From the breaking of the dawn
To the setting of the sun
I will stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Words of power strong to save
That will never pass away
I will stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
For Your covenant is sure
And on this I am secure
I can stand on ev’ry promise from Your word

2 When I stumble and I sin
Condemnation pressing in
I will stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
You are faithful to forgive
That in freedom I might live
So I stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Guilt to innocence restored
You remember sins no more
So I’ll stand on ev’ry promise of Your word

3 When I’m faced with anguished choice
I will listen for Your voice
And I’ll stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Through this dark and troubled land
You will guide me with Your hand
As I stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
And You’ve promised to complete
Ev’ry work begun in me
So I’ll stand on ev’ry promise of Your word

4 Hope that lifts me from despair
Love that casts out ev’ry fear
As I stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Not forsaken not alone
For the Comforter has come
And I stand on ev’ry promise of Your word
Grace sufficient grace for me
Grace for all who will believe
We will stand on ev’ry promise of Your word

Closing Hymn: Go To the World!

Go to the world! Go into all the earth;
Go preach the cross where Christ renews life’s worth,
Baptizing as the sign of our rebirth. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the world! Go into every place;
Go live the word of God’s redeeming grace;
Go seek God’s presence in each time and space. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the world! Go struggle, bless, and pray;
The nights of tears give way to joyful day.
As servant Church, you follow Christ’s own way. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Go to the World! Go as the ones I send,
For I am with you till the age shall end,
When all the host of glory cry, “Amen.” Alleluia. Alleluia.
