Prelude

“Festive Praise” – Lloyd Larson

Welcome and Invocation

Readings: Ephesians 6:10-12; Mark 1:21-28

Epistle Reading Ephesians 6:10–12

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Mark 1:21–28

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.

21They went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath [Jesus] entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Confession and Absolution

P In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, and call upon Him in prayer and praise, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

-Silence is observed for self-examination-

C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Hymn: Onward, Christian Soldiers

Hymn: Onward, Christian Soldiers

1 Onward, Christian soldiers,
    Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
    Going on before.
Christ, the royal master,
    Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle
    See His banners go! Refrain

ref Onward, Christian soldiers,
    Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
    Going on before.

2 Like a mighty army
    Moves the Church of God;
Brothers, we are treading
    Where the saints have trod.
We are not divided,
    All one body we,
One in hope and doctrine,
    One in charity. Refrain

3 Crowns and thrones may perish,
    Kingdoms rise and wane,
But the Church of Jesus
    Constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never
    ’Gainst that Church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise,
    And that cannot fail. Refrain

4 Onward, then, ye faithful,
    Join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices
    In the triumph song:
Glory, laud, and honor
    Unto Christ, the king;
This through countless ages
    Men and angels sing. Refrain

Sermon

Anthem: O Church Arise

Apostle’s Creed

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life + everlasting. Amen.
