Prelude

Opening Hymn: Here I Am, and I Have Come

Here I am, and I have come
To thank You, Lord, for all You’ve done;
Thank You, Lord!
You paid the price at Calvary,
You shed Your blood, You set me free;
Thank You, Lord!
No greater love was ever shown,
No better life ever was laid down.

You took my sin, You took my shame,
You drank my cup, You bore my pain:
Thank You, Lord!
You broke the curse, You broke the chains,
In victory from death You rose again;
Thank You, Lord!
And not by works, but by your grace,
You clothe me now in your righteousness.

[Refrain – repeat 2x]
And I will always love Your name.
And I will always sing Your praise.

You bid me come, You make me whole,
You give me peace, You restore my soul;
Thank You, Lord!
You fill me up, and when I’m full
You give me more ‘til I overflow;
Thank You, Lord!
You’re making me to be like You,
To do the works of the Father, too.
[Refrain]

Welcome and Invocation

Confession and Absolution

P Return to me with all your heart, says the Lord, with prayer and fasting, weeping and mourning, with broken and contrite hearts.
C For the Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.
Kneel
(Silence for reflection and self-examination)
P Merciful Father, You sent Your Son to save sinners, and I have sinned!
C I have failed to love, even those closest to me, preferring that others serve me.
I have neglected works of mercy,
as though disregard of others fulfilled my duty to them.
I have resisted Your word and the Holy Spirit’s guidance of my heart, presuming that I know better.
I have been enticed by fallen desires, rebelling against You.
O Lord, wash away my sin. Create in me a clean heart, and uphold me with a humble spirit which walks trustingly with You.

P How great is the mercy of God, that we would sin and He would give His beloved Son to die for it. But it’s true! For the sake of Him who died in our place, God does not count our sins against us. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Readings and Prayer of the Day: Romans 16:3–9; Mark 1:9–20

Epistle: Romans 16:3–9
[This is about half the list of friends Paul greets at the end of his letter to the Romans. Evidently, he didn’t work alone!]
3Greetings Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. 5Greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in Asia. 6Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you. 7Greet Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners. They are well known to the apostles, and they were in Christ before me. 8Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord. 9Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Mark 1:9–20
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw
the heavens opening and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
12The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
16Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon: Commit to Community

Apostles’ Creed

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen.
